Severe macaws are one of the largest of the mini macaws. Their life span is approximately 30 years – and even longer in some cases. They are friendly and comical and have an impressive speaking ability. Most severe macaws will have a vocabulary of several words and phrases and some may pick up words so quickly you will find yourself watching everything you say around them. It’s often been said that Severe macaws are large macaws trapped in mini bodies.
Like their larger cousins, severe macaws are highly intelligent and need plenty of toys and free time to keep them from getting bored and developing unwanted behaviors such as screaming or feather mutilation. Therefore, they do require a good amount of mental stimulation. They will need several toys in their cages (and on their stands) as well as a good amount of “people time” to keep them from getting bored. Severe macaws should be given plenty of “free” or “out of cage” time. Two to four hours of free time per day is preferred for these active little birds. They can do tricks and actually pick them up quite easily. Severe macaws are curious, fun little birds. However, their curiosity may get them in trouble at times – so be sure to keep an eye on your severe when he or she is outside their cage.
Severe macaws are also avid chewers. So, a variety of wood toys can provide hours of entertainment and will help to keep their beak trimmed in a more natural way. Not to say that your bird won’t need an occasional beak trim, but wooden toys will help to keep it at a natural and healthy length.
Severe macaws can become one-person birds so it’s very important that they are socialized at a young age with everyone in the household. They are more nervous than their larger cousins, so introducing a new person into their lives will require time and patience. However, they bond quickly with their owners. So, it’s a good rule of thumb to have everyone in the house set aside some time to play and interact with your bird on a daily basis.
Severe macaws are mainly an iridescent green with dark chestnut patches on their foreheads and beaks. They have a blue crown and red patches on the edges of their wings. Their tail feathers are blue with red undersides. Severes can reach up to 18 inches in length – of that – about half is their tail.
Like their larger macaw cousins, Severe macaws require a diet higher in fat than most birds. A well rounded diet includes a good seed mix such as Island Treat Nature’s Garden Blend for Parrots or ABBA 1300 Large Hookbill, pellets such as ZuPreem Natural Maintenance for Medium to Large Parrots, nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables.
