Umbrella Cockatoos

Umbrella Cockatoos are considered the most affectionate of all parrots. They love to snuggle and cuddle and will want to spend as much time with their “human” as possible. While they may learn to mimic a few words, they are not considered “great” talkers and will not have the talking ability found in the Congo African Greys. Most of those who have Umbrella Cockatoos acquired them for their affectionate and loving personalities. Because of their natural trick ability, Umbrella Cockatoos are regularly featured in bird shows or television programs.

Umbrella Cockatoos are entirely white at first glance. However, if you startle or excite one, you will see the feathers of its crest pop up, forming a type of “headdress” resembling an umbrella. This is where their name comes from. Under their “umbrella,” the feathers are bright yellow. The underside of their wings and tail is also yellow. They have a bare patch of skin around their eyes which is blue in color. This patch of skin can sometimes help determine an Umbrella’s age since, like humans, this area tends to wrinkle as the birds get older.

It’s important to note that the Umbrella Cockatoo is a powder preening gland. So, if you have someone in your family with allergies, asthma or similar respiratory problems, the Umbrella Cockatoo would not be the bird for you. Their dander creates a fine white powder which may be visible on clothing should you brush against a flat surface, as well as put a fine coating on furniture. If you don’t have a respiratory problem, prefer a bird that is very loving in nature and don’t mind a bit more dusting around the house, the Umbrella Cockatoo may be just the bird you are looking for. Air purifiers will help to keep the dander to a minimum.

Umbrella Cockatoos are very animated and very vocal. They are not recommended for those living in an apartment or similar situation where bird noises may upset neighbors. It is also very important to keep these birds entertained with different toys to test their intelligence in order to decrease their vocalizations. As well, if you do not have at least three hours a day to spend with your umbrella cockatoo then you should consider another species.

In the wild, the Umbrella Cockatoo eats a varied diet. It’s important to offer them different foods in a home environment as well. Zupreme Natural Pellets, Lafeber Nutriberries and Island Treat Nature’s Blend or Parrot Pleasure as well as Goldenfeast Fruits and Nuts Plus would be a great base diet. Umbrella Cockatoos should also be offered different fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts as well.
